Join us for the official book launch of
Juneteenth Rodeo
(University of Texas Press, 2024)
accompanied by a lecture presentation by author Sarah Bird.
In the late 1970s, bestselling Texas writer Sarah Bird documented the Black rodeo circuit in East Texas. Before Juneteenth was officially commemorated, generations of talented Black cowboys and cowgirls honored the holiday with local rodeos and celebrations. Essays by Bird and sports historian Demetrius Pearson reclaim the crucial role of Black Americans in the Western US and show modern rodeo riders—who still compete on today’s circuit—as “descendants” in a more than two-hundred-year lineage of Black cowboys (University of Texas Press, 2024).
The event is completely FREE but pre-registration is required.
